John Wood, chairman of Locomotive 5542 Ltd

A message from the Chairman of 5542 Ltd

Welcome to our 'New Look' website now managed by Steve Huddy and many thanks to Rodney Greenway for getting the whole thing underway 5 years ago. Hopefully you will continue to visit here to follow our progress with the operation of our loco. It feels like just a couple of years ago that we first witnessed the fruits of our original 23 year task of restoring 5542 from scrapyard hulk to fully operational locomotive having raised the 250,000 that allowed us to do it. However, we are all 10 years older and as we are now approaching Chapter 2 of our locos preservation story the Directors of Locomotive 5542 Limited are optimistic that we can continue where we left off just 6 months ago, fulfilling our aims of running and operating a steam locomotive on a completely self financing basis. During the first 10 year period 5542 operated on no less than 13 different railways on a total of 865 days and without exception was well received by operators, crews and public alike. It proved to be a reliable and economic performer and we continue to moniter and try to improve the performance and operational ease for the benefit of all concerned. At the time of writing (02/03/2012) 5542 will commence the new session with a spell on the South Devon Railway followed by our return to one of our major customers of recent years the Gloucestershire/Warwickshire railway where we will arrive on or around 8th June to share duties on the Cheltenham/Winchcombe section. Hopefully the completion of embankment repairs will allow reunification of both sections and a 24 mile round tripshould be available later in 2012. We continue to explore all avenues for the loco to work on our 'Home Railway' the WSR and after a false start over this winter just passed we hope to talk again with their management later in 2012.

You will probably be aware of our current project to restore GWR Autotrailer 169 to complement our locomotive. Please look for links to that site and support us in any way you can to help us continue to progress that project towards fruition.

Many thanks for your interest.

John Wood, Chairman, Locomotive 5542 Limited

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about our locomotive or associated projects.
